Human Powered Vehicle Program (HPV)
At Tyabb Primary School, we are incredibly proud of our long-standing Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) Program. It’s a remarkable, year-long program that has been a cornerstone of our school community for over 20 years.
Open to selected students in Grades 5 and 6, the HPV program is so much more than a race. It is a rich, cross-curricular learning experience that seamlessly integrates teamwork, engineering, physical fitness, strategy, communication and resilience. From the very first training session through to race day, students are immersed in a genuine real-world challenge that develops skills and qualities that extend far beyond the classroom.
The program offers a truly diverse and engaging range of learning opportunities across multiple disciplines. Through STEM-focused vehicle design and engineering, students apply mathematical and scientific thinking to solve real design challenges, developing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills in an authentic and meaningful context. They explore environmental science and sustainability, gaining a deep understanding of energy efficiency, human-powered transport and the importance of reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. Students also develop a fascinating insight into human body systems exploring how the muscular, skeletal and cardiovascular systems work together to power performance and build endurance.
The program also places a strong emphasis on communication and performance skills, with students engaging in public speaking and presentation opportunities to share their learning journey with peers, teachers and the broader school community — building confidence and voice along the way.
Throughout the program, students develop physical fitness and endurance, grow as leaders and build a strong sense of responsibility and sportsmanship, forging lasting friendships through shared challenge and achievement.
Each year, our students compete in the Victorian HPV Series races before culminating in the ultimate challenge — the prestigious Energy Breakthrough at Maryborough, one of the largest and most celebrated student events in Australia, drawing hundreds of schools from across the country. It is an experience that leaves a lasting impression on every student fortunate enough to be involved.
The HPV program is a wonderful reflection of our school community working together, with students, teachers and parents all playing an integral role in its success. We are enormously proud of this tradition and the outstanding young people it continues to foster.
